Staying in touch with our bodies: Stronger sense of ownership during self- compared to other touch despite temporal mismatches

چکیده
Self-touch is considered important for bodily self-consciousness and self-other distinction has been reported to improve clinical symptoms of disembodiment. To investigate the link between self-touch disembodiment in healthy participants, we studied effect versus touch produced by another person (other-touch) on experimentally induced In a mixed reality paradigm, across two experiments, participants could see their own body surroundings with controllable visual delay either stroked hand paintbrush or were it experimenter. Experiment 1 first assessed sensitivity temporal multimodal mismatches delay-induced changes sense ownership three conditions, namely self-touch, other-touch hidden-self-touch (visually occluding touching hand). second block, compared phenomenological physiological (threat response) measures conditions. 2 roughly replicated block but included condition which performed gesture without hand. Such experiment attempted control potential role efferent signals. Our results show that increasing generally enhances feeling disembodiment, yet decrease less pronounced during self-touch. For however, diverging findings are discussed. This study provides evidence importance sustaining context

متن کاملVoluntary self-touch increases body ownership
Experimental manipulations of body ownership have indicated that multisensory integration is central to forming bodily self-representation. Voluntary self-touch is a unique multisensory situation involving corresponding motor, tactile and proprioceptive signals. Yet, even though self-touch is frequent in everyday life, its contribution to the formation of body ownership is not well understood. ...

While chemical forms of cell-to-cell communication are well recognized to coordinate bacterial populations, electrical signaling has been relatively ignored. Humphries et al. show that Bacillus subtilis biofilms utilize potassium production to attract far away, motile cells of even phylogenetically distant species by altering their membrane potential.

A quantum leap in prosthesis research, says scientist. Scientists have created a hand prosthesis that not only receives and responds to brain signals, but also sends information back to the brain. This means, for ins...
متن کاملRobots with a sense of touch.
The development of the sense of touch in robotics is an engineering challenge. The so-called 8 “electronic skin”, which covers different parts of a robot with sensors responding to mechanical 9 and other environmental stimuli, requires system-level development that spans from materials 10 and electronics up to communication and processing. Robots equipped with tactile sensing may 11 have many d...
